Businesses stand to gain tremendously – if they can figure out how to train their employees quickly and equitably.

Although companies embracing AI can swiftly enhance efficiency and profitability, the true value of AI lies not in the systems themselves but in how organisations leverage them to augment human capabilities.

A significant majority of workers (six in 10) recognise the need to acquire new skills due to AI's impact, yet a staggering 88% lack confidence in their employer's support for understanding this technology.

This should serve as a wake-up call for employers.

Generative AI's impact of workforce Productivity

Skilled use of Generative Al, like ChatGPT, delivers a powerful and multiplicative productivity boost equivalent to a 2-year experience enhancement for every employee. For employees new to a subject, the productivity boost exceeds 40% and even experienced employees gain a substantial productivity boost.

With specifically trained AI systems - trained using specific business goals in mind, productivity increases are far greater.

*SPOKEO Survey 2023

Instead of replacing jobs, we believe AI will predominantly be used to come alongside workers, freeing them up to do more high-value tasks, such as:
  • Human interaction: Automate everyday tasks (merchandising, in-take paperwork, etc.) to allow more time for key human interactions that improve customer experience

  • Instant data-backed recommendations: Instantly provide enhanced customer data to provide better recommendations on the phone, in-stores, or healthcare facilities

  • Strategic work: Shore up time from administrative, HR, or IT tasks to focus on strategic projects

Bottom line? Employees need to get comfortable with AI quickly, and employers need to pave the way for this discovery.

*McKinsey Survey 2024

Out of the 60% of workers who acknowledge the need to acquire new skills due to AI's influence, a staggering third believe they must do so within the next year.

However, the market lacks adequate AI training opportunities for employees without bachelor's degrees, who constitute the majority of the workforce and more than 80% of the frontline workforce, totalling a staggering 112 million individuals.

Adaptive Intelligence's research into the AI training landscape has revealed a sobering reality: more than half of the available AI education programs require a bachelor's degree, catering primarily to engineers or executives.

There’s very little training available for the non-tech professional – much less the frontline worker. That has to change.

AI training is limited to a privileged few despite widespread impact

Employers have a short window of opportunity to build the skills needed for an AI-powered future.

As with any exciting new technology, employers have a short window before the “hype” dissipates to drive employee engagement, adoption and the integration of new AI skills into daily work.

To date, most employers, managers, educational institutions, and professors have neglected to provide comprehensive guidelines for effectively utilizing AI tools. The messaging from those who have addressed it has been inconsistent, leaving employees confused and concerned about their job prospects.

Executives and HR leaders now have a critical responsibility and opportunity: to foster a culture that embraces AI as a beneficial ally. By establishing clear guidelines, offering structured training, and cultivating a positive mindset toward AI integration, they can empower their workforce to confidently navigate this technological shift and unlock the full potential of human-AI collaboration.

  • Varied: Offering training from basic to expert levels.

  • Equitable: Accessible to all workers across all roles.

  • Flexible: Enabling self-paced enrollment in classes.
